New Years Eve on a Budget

The challenge: Shopping with a 5 & 2 year old
My mission: New Years Eve Outfit
My budget: Cheap

Since I am trying to keep my expenses down and start the new year off right, I went to the local Salvation Army thrift shop yesterday to find something to wear for the big night.  My typical shopping outing with the kids is pretty stressful, but it turned out to be an incredibly successful trip, I was able to get what I wanted (and more!) for a great price.

Here is what I found:
black dress for $3.49 (valued at $25)
pair of vintage coral pumps for $4.59 (in great condition, marked $84.00 original price)
metallic gold vintage clutch purse for $1.49 (valued at $20)
calf length vintage wool coat with sherling fur collar for $8.99  (valued at $150)

Total cost: $18.46
Approximate value: $279.00

In addition to the treasures I found while shopping, I wore some of my favorite vintage rhinestone jewelry. All in all, it turned out to be a great night! I got tons of complements on my outfit, especially my shoes!

It's funny, at one time in my life I would have had no problem spending full price on that outfit, and would have been embarrassed to admit shopping second hand. But, times have most definitely changed. Not only has my budget decreased, but I have developed a great appreciation for vintage pieces and I am proud to share my finds! Now, I have seen the light, broken the mall habit and become a savvy shopper. This mentality has spread to all aspects of my life; I now appreciate buying second hand. In the spring time, we frequent garage sales for clothes for the kids and other treasures. One our favorite things to do is to go to antique stores and auctions. I have found some of my favorite clothes, pieces of furniture and other great items from these venues. Now, I love things with a story and with character and above all,  quality things from bi gone era made to last. Anyhow, I am happy to say that perspective has changed for the better and now I see the value in being thrifty!
